Marimekko, founded in 1951 by Armi and Viljo Ratia, was born out of a desire to inject vibrant optimism into a somber post-war Finland. The brand pioneered the concept of the modern lifestyle design house, using bold, colorful abstract patterns on simple cotton garments to empower women and promote self-expression.
I was drawn to these patterns in the 1980’s while designing my children’s room. The bright colors and patterns still bring me joy and great memories.
